FAQ

WHAT IS A PRIVATE SCHOOL SATELLITE PROGRAM?

A PSP or Private School Satellite Program is a private independent study umbrella program. In a PSP parents teach their children at home using any methods and curricula they choose. The PSP acts as the student's school of record and maintains the documents legally required for private schools in California.

IS RIVENDELL ACADEMY AN ACCREDITED SCHOOL?

No. Like most PSPs, Rivendell Academy is not regionally or nationally accredited. Students who need the equivalent of an accredited diploma for their future plans can take the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) or the GED.

AM I REQUIRED TO TEACH MY CHILD FOR A CERTAIN NUMBER OF DAYS?

While the state of California does not have a minimum requirement on instructional time in private schools, Rivendell Academy recommends doing educational activities with your child at least 180 days per year.

WHAT CURRICULUM DO YOU USE?

Every child and family is different! Through our consulting services we provide customized curriculum recommendations based on your needs. As Rivendell Academy does not directly provide curriculum, families are responsible for any costs of their chosen curriculum.

IS KINDERGARTEN REQUIRED IN CALIFORNIA?

Kindergarten is not specifically required, instead the state requires students to be enrolled in school once they reach the age of 6. We offer Kindergarten enrollment so that students whose sixth birthday occurs after September 1 can be legally enrolled in school.

CAN GRADUATES ATTEND COLLEGE?

Yes! Two graduates (my own children) already attend college. Most colleges and universities do not require that a high school diploma be from an accredited school. Students who need the equivalent of an accredited diploma can take the CHSPE or GED.
